Devon Retreat Malborough

Hope Cove

Hope Cove is split by a headland into two great sandy beaches, Outer Hope and Inner Hope (pictured to the left and below respectively).

Outer Hope has a wonderfully dry sandy beach with a good stream, providing hours of entertainment for children (and fathers).   The beach can also get good breakers when the tide is changing, which is great fun for 'Boogie Boarding'. There is great food to be had here from the Hope and Anchor pub, cafes and the village Post Office come beach shop which all overlook the beach.   There is a large carpark as you approach Inner Hope, next to the Hope and Anchor pub that also has several free parking spaces.

Inner Hope

Inner Hope is a large mainly wet sandy beach, although there is a lovely dry area close to the several houses that are on the sea front.  The old life boat house is a striking sight at the far end of the beach.  Inner Hope and Outer Hope are connected by a small walkway (with an icecream shop en route).

Salcombe Estuary

Salcombe is well known for its sailing, boating and being a great holiday destination.   It is blessed with incredible countryside and a wonderful natural harbour.   There are several sandy beaches that can be reached by ferry from the harbour pontoon (pictured left).   The local pubs and restaurants are a great place to relax, after visiting a variety of the local shops.

There are two car parks in Salcombe; the smallest is right in the heart of town (overlooking the scene in the photo), the largest is just to the far side of the estuary.   This allows you to take a great walk into town, traversing the length of the estuary, its boat yards and suppliers as well as ice cream, antique and chocolate shops.

South Sands

South Sands is a fun beach to visit.  It has a great large sandy beach, with a stream for the kids to play in. There is a ferry to Salcombe, which you board via a watertractor that takes you down the beach and out into the sea to meet the incoming ferry, great fun never mind what your age.  There is also a great tuck shop and the local hotel, Tides Reach, can provide you with more luxury refreshments.

Thurlestone Bay

Looking across Thurlestone bay from the National Trusts Coastal Walkway. Thurlestone has two carparks; one overlooking the bay from Thurlestone lower town, and the other is run by the National Trust which overlooks the main bay (it also has a small refreshments shop that is run in the summer months).
